In just the few days since the release of the Spirit, I’ve heard many more personal reviews on it than I was expecting at all. While most of them are extremely polarizing -my friends all loved it, my family all hated it- it didn’t surprise me at all after seeing the movie.
I went this past Friday night to see The Spirit at my local Rave Theater, which totally did the special effects and the filming style complete justice. The Spirit is filmed in the same style as Sin City, with a bit more color added to it, which I feel was a good choice, as it provides a little softening to the usually harsh black/white/red/ect of Frank Millers style.
The entire movie felt like “random scenes cut together” in my brothers words, and I kinda agree with him. I feel the quick and odd scene/costume changes, in almost a theatrical style, especially The Octopus’ scenes, really disconcerted the audience.
As far as what genera I would put The Spirit in, its hard to say. I feel dramas need some comedy to keep them light, and comedies need some drama to give them a story line, while I feel The Spirit couldn’t decide which it wanted to be.
There were some funny parts, nothing laugh out loud, and there were some great dramatic parts, but nothing to write home about.
I feel the movie could have done better if edited differently, and if the campiness was taken down a notch.
Overall, I’m on the fence about it, I would rent it, I wouldn’t recommend going to the theater for it, I wouldn’t buy it unless you’re a huge fan of Frank Miller.
Although if you are wanting to see this simply for your love of women, go for it, they do not disappoint.
